FAQ
What does Epoch Cipher do?
We split the things you cannot replace into five shares, engrave them on stainless steel, and put one in the hands of each of five people you choose. Any three of them can recover everything. Any two, nothing. Every kit is created and marked by us, offline, and we keep no copy.
Do you need my passwords or secret codes?
No. We do not ask for passwords, recovery codes, or secret phrases.
Do you hold my accounts, money, or crypto?
No. Epoch Cipher is non-custodial. You keep control.
What do you actually deliver?
Five sealed kits — one per custodian — each with an engraved steel card, an offline copy of your encrypted data, a hardware key, and a printed guide. Plus a signed attestation of what was made and that we kept nothing.
Why steel?
Fire, water, and time. The card is the part of the plan that has to outlast every device you own.
Why five, and why three?
You can lose two cards and still recover. No two people can act alone. Five custodians and a threshold of three is the balance we build every set to; there is no menu.
Do you keep a copy?
No. Every set of kits comes with a signed attestation saying so.
What if Epoch Cipher closes?
Your kit does not need us. Any three of the five cards and an offline tool recover the secret, and nothing in that step depends on Epoch Cipher existing. The split uses SLIP-39, an open standard, so the cards can be read without any tool of ours.
What is the first thing I should do?
Run the drill. It takes 15–30 minutes and its first question is the one that matters: who are your five?
Is this a password manager?
No. A password manager can be a good part of a plan. We help you build the recovery around your tools and your people.
Is this legal advice or estate planning?
No. This is continuity and security planning. If legal language is needed, we can coordinate with your attorney.
What can you not promise?
We cannot recover something that was never put in the kit, and we cannot help if fewer than three of your custodians can be reached. We can make sure that if three can be, it works.
What information do you try not to collect?
We ask only what we need to plan a ceremony, every question is optional, and we never ask what you are protecting.
We will never ask you to send us passwords, recovery codes, or secret phrases anywhere. Ever.
Can this be done remotely?
A ceremony is in person, at our site or yours, so that we can both see that nothing left the room. Every kit is created and marked by us, offline, and we keep no copy.
