Accessibility
Many people arrive here at a hard moment, some of them older, some using a screen reader or a keyboard alone. The site is built for that first.
What we do
- Text you can read. Body text is at least 18 pixels, in a serif face chosen for reading, with high contrast on a pale background. Everything scales with your browser’s text size and zoom, to 200 percent and beyond, without anything being cut off.
- Works without a mouse. Every link, button and card can be reached with the Tab key and used with Enter or Space, and the thing that has focus is always outlined. A “Skip to content” link is the first thing the Tab key reaches.
- Works with a screen reader. Pages use proper headings and landmarks, images carry text alternatives, and the card illustration announces each card’s number, side and whether it is present rather than reading out its engraved words.
- Honours your settings. If your system asks for less motion, nothing on the site moves. If it asks for more contrast, grey text becomes black. In Windows High Contrast mode the cards are drawn in your chosen colours.
- No surprises. Nothing plays, pops up or moves on its own. There are no cookies to consent to, and the one form on the site is plain HTML that works with scripts turned off.
- Plain words. Short sentences, no jargon where an ordinary word will do, and the same wording for the same thing on every page.
How we check
Every page is checked with an automated accessibility checker and by hand with a keyboard before it is published. We have not yet had an independent audit; when we do, it will be noted here.
